TROUBLESHOOTING HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS…TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE

The schematics below show wiring connections for two different types of defrost timers. I replaced the OEM timer in the upper diagram with that in the lower…can you figure out what the wiring connections would be?

  1. Good work. Got anything on gas packs?

  2. ..the “Troubleshooting 80% HSI Furnaces” should be available mid-February…I know, that’s not a gas pack. But it will pretty much cover the “gas side” of gas packs…in the meantime and in lieu of a “gas pack” video, is there a specific question regarding gas packs i can try to answer for you?

  3. REPLACED 10-seer 3-ton condensing unit with 13-seer 3-ton. Do i need to change inside A-coil .help

  4. It depends on who you ask. The Mfg of the condenser will no doubt say “YES”…Heat pumps and A/C’s have always been designed for matched indoor and outdoor units, whether the SEER values were the same or not…however, in practice, mismatching has gone on for years and there are a lot of 13 SEER condensers currently matched up with whatever the existing indoor unit happened to be…and most of them are probably performing satisfactorily. The general consensus however, is against mismatching 13 SEER condensers with “10 SEER” indoor coils…best case scenario with a mismatched heat pump system is the inability to achieve the condenser rated SEER value…the “system” will not operate at 13 SEER efficiency. Worst case scenario is operational problems between heat and cool cycles…it’s possible the system would have to be “adjusted” seasonally for each cycle.

I doubt reputable service companies are indiscriminately pursuing the practice of mismatching equipment…it is in come cases (states), illegal. I suppose realistically, it comes down to what you were told, what you expect and maybe what you could afford. So long as you were made aware of all the potential pitfalls beforehand, the situation will likely be a non-issue.

  5. You changed from a 10 SEER to a 13 SEER. The answer is YES!!! You will have to change the indoor coil. There is a lot more coil in a 13 SEER and the outside unit is desinged for the extra coil. It will not work right if you dont. You will never be able to get your pressures right if you dont.
